Gods Will Fall

According to the Greek historian Strabo, the brave Celts feared only one thing: that the sky would fall on their heads!  No wonder, then, that they even challenge their tyrannical gods when their torque bursts because of their cruelty. So thousands of warriors set out in a huge fleet to destroy the formerly worshipped.

However, they send some nasty storms and waves, so nearly all the Avengers die. All of them? No, not quite: a small band survives and gets stranded on the island of Morrigan, Belenos, Krannus & Co. The intro still seems reasonably gloomy and pathetic, but when the curtain opens, the mood suddenly changes to lightheartedly cheerful: just a moment ago, the brutal gods looked like Cthulhu beings, it almost smelled like the rage of a God of War, and then you feel like you're in a pastel-colored Asterix world.

You move eight male and female warriors from a slanted overhead view through a pretty, almost idyllic-looking landscape staged by the Unity engine. Those who are somewhat familiar with the Celts will recognize authentic helmets, among other things, but the game doesn't echo any Gaelic or Gallic in terms of the gods or the story - it doesn't have to. But due to the comic style, which only reveals a few details on the generic-looking characters, as well as the fixed distant camera, you remain rather a distant observer - who notices some flickering shadows, the missing footprints as well the not quite clean frame rate quite early on.

If you open the map, 13 locations are immediately displayed - these are home to the gods, including a giant spider, ghosts, or a crow. In which order you do this is not prescribed - but what flatters the Celtic's desire for freedom later provides nasty surprises, because the difficulty level can vary greatly, some areas are suitable for special warriors. Clues to this? Sparsely to not at all. Once you're in, you can't get out!

Conclusion

The battles are too unspectacular as well as imprecisely staged - there is neither the flow of a brute hack slays nor situational tactical tension. The Clever Beans team has previously made simple brawlers like When Vikings Attack! for PS3 and Vita, in which action-packed brawling was in the foreground - here it becomes apparent how little experience they have with more demanding fights. The pastel-colored backdrops quickly lose their idyllic appeal, especially since the level design is too static despite a bit of hopping here and destruction there. Finally, the cheerful mood with the cheering gestures doesn't fit the brutal theme of the story and intro at all. It's a pity about the interesting idea around the brave Celts, but in umpteen games, the fighting is better by several classes.
